Absentminds continues to flog their
forward looking, bass leaning sounds at Mint Club this month, once again
stitching up a hole in the fabric of Leeds’ nightlife as a result. This
time out it’s Martyn, Pinch and Sully bringing the beats.
Dutchman Martyn has forged his very own sound since first emerging. It’s
one that evolves at whim, but at the centre of it all is a sleek,
muscular production prowess that re-wires the DNA of everything from
garage to techno, jungle to house. His sensational Brainfeeder released
album, Ghost People, demonstrated that late last year (and placed highly
in a number of respected year end polls as a result) but so too is the
man an arbiter of fine taste via his 3024 imprint which has bolstered
the careers of Julio Bashmore, Mosca and many more bright young talents.
He’s not known as the ‘Dutch Don’ for nothing…
Pinch, too, is a
revered label boss. His Tectonic imprint helped defined the whole
dubstep scene from its base in Bristol, whilst the man behind it crafts
powerful dub infused rhythms on labels like Punch Drunk and Honest Jons
(most recently for a full length alongside Shackleton). This year also
sees Pinch mix it up for the hallowed fabriclive series... As do his DJ
sets, it’s a mix that weaves in and out of genres and styles with ease,
touching on a whole continuum of bass heavy sounds.
Closing out
this weighty line-up is the UK’s Sully – a producer who gets his kicks
by toying with everything from well swung 2-step to dusty breakbeats via
UK funky and the kinetic footwork movement. His recent full length
Carrier on Keysound was a radioactive melange of plenty of sounds and
styles yet still had its own clear voice. Expect much of the same from
one of his DJ sets.
